For over 500 years, on one of the coldest nights of the year, over nine thousand men in loin clothes descend on Saidaiji Temple in Okayama Prefecture. After running through freezing cold water in a purification ritual, they amass within the temple. Priests toss a lucky talisman from a balcony, and the men wrestle to grab it, the victor blessed with a year of good luck. People have died at this festival - it's hardcore. Even in the wait before the scramble begins, the jostling for space sends bodies tumbling down the steep stone steps. How unique rites-of-passage establish a local sense of identity is a key theme of these kinds of images in my book DISPSOABLES.
