In 1799, our #WomanCrushWednesday Cao Zhenxiu wrote a series of 16 poems about legendary women from Chinese history and folklore. 💥
This genre, known as "exemplary women" (lienü), was old—but Cao's choices were new.
Dissatisfied with the usual heroines—chaste widows and dutiful daughters—Cao wrote about poets, scholars, calligraphers, artists, and warriors, arguing for an expanded understanding of female virtue.
To bring her work to life, Cao asked 25-year-old artist Gai Qi to illustrate her poems. 🖋️ Gai made paintings that also challenged tradition, pairing virtuoso brush technique with witty, inventive compositions to match Cao's poems.
