Although only dudes have won the thing since its inception, the O’Neill Wave of the Winter has always welcomed anyone attempting to pack the bomb of the North Shore winter — man, woman, child or otherwise. For the 2019-20 season, which also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the event, officials have unveiled a new category special award. And dudes need not apply.

The O’Neill Women’s Overall Performance Award will reward one female surfer who consistently demonstrates courage, skill and style while riding the most challenging waves on the North Shore during the Wave of the Winter waiting period. Winner takes home $5,000 and the inaugural prestige, as chosen by the elite WOTW judging panel.

Incidentally, the bar has already been set by local wahine darkhorse, Moana Jones (@moana.17, above, filmed by Dawson Jones) who just last week punctuated a classic Pipeline tuberide with a rather serious blow-tail off the oncoming section.
