On this #TransDayofRemembrance, we want to recognize the life and legacy of Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson." Active in New York between 1963 and 1992, Johnson was a cult figure in the downtown gay community, an organizer for sex workers’ rights, and a cofounder, with Sylvia Rivera, of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries).

Portrayed above by actress Mya Taylor, Johnson was the subject of Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel's 2018 film "Happy Birthday, Marsha!" and the related 2017 short film "Lost in the Music." Both films re-envision Johnson's historically decisive role in instigating the 1969 anti-policing riots at the Stonewall Inn.

Screened as part of our 2017 exhibition "Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon," "Lost in the Music" re-centers Johnson and Rivera within narratives of political resistance that too often erase the contributions of trans women of color. #TDOR @hbdmarsha
