Murata made his debut and progressed in his career riding the upward surge of the Lifestyle Crafts. I also met him around that time and was captivated by his creative worldview. But over time, through our many conversations, I began to understand the problems associated with the pottery boom. In order to secure income, he would have to hold over ten shows each year, one after another all over Japan. He would also have to constantly respond to the requests from the stores handling his works and, in the hope of pleasing the customers, he would get mired in the wave of trends, losing sight of his own creative sense. For years, he hadn’t had the time to thoroughly concentrate on producing his work. Although he had always aspired to achieving the marriage supreme between food and ceramics through dialogues with professional chefs, he had diverged increasingly further away from such a vision. We concluded that the only way to solve this problem was to fundamentally redo everything, and that in order to do so, he must completely sever ties with all the stores he had worked with in the past. Moreover, once Murata’s idea that he wanted dialogues with professional chefs became crystallized, we were unable to find an existing store that could fulfill such a wish, and therefore decided that we must open a store ourselves. Yet why, oh why did illness have to strike him just as everything was starting to fall into places? In the upcoming two-day-only show at tonoto, we are given the opportunity to present and sell Murata’s works he had made before drastically shifting his path; they are works from 2015 or earlier that were collecting dust in his studio. This will be an exhibition with a ritualistic significance for Murata, through which he aims to reconcile his past and face his future on the occasion of his illness and treatment. 👉」10月19日 22時56分 - takashipom
