We need to get their approval that you can stay.’ So I made an appointment with every manager in my chain, all the way up to my office director. I met with each one of them and said, ‘Just so you know, the file that’s about to come to your desk—it’s a person. And I thought maybe you should get to know me before you make a decision about my career.’ I think it helped to put a face to the file. It was a stressful time because I didn’t know each day if I was going to be walked out the door. Eventually, I was informed that my security review went through. At that point, I started looking up every regulation I could find. I wanted to know what they actually said and how they were implemented and what it meant for people like me. I became very knowledgeable about the policies, and other officers started finding me. We started as just a small group of people who were talking to each other, just to learn. In the mid ‘90s, that was when society was really starting to have more conversations about homosexuality. On the conversation boards online at work, there were posts about how gay people didn’t belong in the workplace. So I outed myself. I put my name on it. I wrote, ‘We are already here.
