It was our honor this morning to dedicate the display of this Mi-17 helicopter, an emblem of CIA’s pursuit of al-Qa’ida. The first American air asset in Afghanistan after 9/11, the Mi-17 went on to fly hundreds of missions and enable operations that would have been otherwise impossible.
Director Haspel called today’s ceremony “a celebration of the daring spirit that defines the CIA.” Gary Schroen and his JAWBREAKER team flew into Afghanistan aboard this helicopter only 15 days after the infamous attack, and Schroen delivered this morning’s keynote address for CIA officers and distinguished guests, including many who flew on the Mi-17.
We’re proud to feature this tangible piece of our campaign against al-Qa’ida on our campus. As part of the CIA Museum, it will be a lasting tribute to our mission and to the officers who served.
