Thanks to timely action, Instituto Araguaia has successfully contained fires that threatened Cantão State Park and an adjacent reserve created to protect the home of myriad species including the endangered Kaempfer's Woodpecker in central Brazil. It took a team of 29 people six days to extinguish the fires, with support from the Amazon Forest Fund and the @AmericanBirdConservancy.

Instituto Araguaia work to protect a critical and unique ecotone where the Amazon, the Pantanal and the Cerrado ecosystems come together. The area is an important refuge for iconic species such as the Pink River Dolphin and Giant Otter.

As elsewhere in the region, large portions of the forest have been cleared for cattle pasture and and cattle feed crops, increasing the risk of wildfires. With the fires in this vital area contained, we are committed to supporting our partners to protect and restore the ecosystems that sustain such a flourishing diversity of life.
