Whale bones, hauntingly decorticate an iceless beach along the Antarctica Peninsula. During the industrial revolution whaling was the primary source for oil and had become increasingly popular world wide. By the 1930’s an estimated 50,000 whales were killed annually. It wasn’t until 1986 that the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling due to signs of heavy depletion. It’s still a practice among some countries even though whale populations have never recovered to anything near what they once were. Seeing this iceless scene is a stark reminder of our present and most prominent man made issue, climate change. Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック @sealegacy
