Four generations of the Cooper family have been fishermen. With parts of the Mississippi River experiencing historically high water levels earlier this year due to severe flooding in the Midwest, the opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway (west of #NewOrleans) has flooded the salt water marshes with fresh water. That, in turn, has driven shrimp, crabs and fish from marshes and bays further out to sea in search of saltier water. In June, #Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced he had requested a federal fisheries disaster declaration, noting the resulting troubles for those who work in the coastal seafood industry.
