There is a river, deep in the Amazon, that boils. It’s aptly called the Boiling River, and it’s a mysterious body of water that reaches 97 degrees Celsius (207 degrees Fahrenheit). This is not a river you’ll want to swim in — simply touch it and you’ll get third degree burns. For Asháninka healers like Maestro Juan (shown in the photo), the water is sacred and full of healing powers. For geoscientist Andres Ruzo, it is a unique geothermal phenomenon that must be protected. “My goal is to ensure that whoever controls this land understands the boiling river's uniqueness and significance,” he says. “We define significance. We are the ones who draw that line between the sacred and the trivial.” To learn more about the Boiling River, visit the link in our bio to watch @andresruzo’s #TEDTalk.
