400 years ago, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. No part of America has been untouched by the years of slavery that followed. “Without the idealistic, strenuous and patriotic efforts of black Americans, our democracy today would most likely look very different — it might not be a democracy at all,” writes Nikole Hannah-Jones. To explore the legacy of slavery, The New York Times and @nytmag have started the #1619Project, a collection of essays, criticism, art and an audio series from more than 30 contributors about the lasting impact of American slavery. Each of the stories in the #1619Project takes up a modern phenomenon and reveals its history. From the lack of universal health care to mass incarceration, from the brutality of capitalism to the epidemic of sugar, The 1619 Project explores how America’s years of slavery still shape the country today. Are you suggesting only “liberals” are the seekers of truth? If there is a stench in the air... and there is in America... you search for its origin in order to rid the environment of the stench. America has been sitting in this soulless, soiled diaper of racial and ethnic bigotry for centuries... let’s not forget the horrors done to Native Americans either.

It's so strange to see so many defending slavery? I'm so confused, is this a personal attack on you? We have to evolve past this feeling of shame and actually combat these latent effects. Let's evolve, America!

Finally! It’s past due to acknowledge the important role our American black forefounders played in building this nation. #1619project #forefounders #americans

The United States of America is NOT a democracy. It was not founded as one. The biases of the Electoral College system are evidence of this intent.

The same people complaining about this are also against removing confederate statues because “your trying to erase our history!”.

And the want to use “democracy” as the reason to overthrow political systems of other nations. We are no longer stupid.
