The discovery of Cortes Bank — then called “Project Neptune” by Surfing magazine photo editor Larry ‘Flame’ Moore and Surfline’s Sean Collins — remains the greatest big-wave discovery of the 21st Century. Head to the site to see this special feature chronicling what led up to the January 2001 mission — and what they found.

So I’m entitled ha ha. Came from a broken home with zero money. So we discover how big that wave could be be surfed? Pete Mel said in the interview that many others surfed here before, but we were the first to tackle it at its biggest. It’s like say guys who climbed half wad up Mt Everest were the first to discover the Peak ha ha. And then discredit the ones that made it to the top first.

My father-in-law use to tell me about his fishing trips and how all the boat captains knew about these huge waves to stay clear from ... he was telling me story’s of the massive breakers of the Cortez banks back in the 80s!
