The village is situated in the so called stone fields of Otuataua next to Auckland. An old volcanic cone and its fertile soil gave shelter and fertility for agricultural activity. These Otuataua stone fields are the last 100 hectares remaining of the once 8000 hectares.  During the Waikaito invasion in 1863, the lands were confiscated by the government from the local Maori for their support to the Kingitanga movement. This movement was basically formed to stop the Maori lands being alienated by the British.  In 1995 the government conceded that the invasion and confiscation of lands in 1863 was wrongful and apologised for its actions.  Part of these lands were farmed by the Wallace family (acquiring the land through a land grant 150 years ago) and sold it on in 2016 to Fletcher Building who wants to build 480 homes on the ancestral lands strewn with archeological remnants and burial sights of the past.
