Jacopo and I had been belaying for hours, while Matty & Nina quested above, precariously hanging on hooks and drilling bolts. Everyone except Jacopo was experiencing ground up route development for the first time. At over 15,000ft, with around 20lbs of extra weight hanging from us, incessantly stressing over the consequences of breaking a hold and taking a slab whipper while attached to such pointy hardware - an abrupt and intense snowstorm was the last thing we needed. I wanted to bail, swore at my frozen feet and hands, and felt some tears well up. Nina started to sing and the the storm ceased, giving way to blue skies. I breathed and took the lead, climbing with the drill clipped to me and running it out as far as my nerves could handle before placing a piece of gear or a bolt. We reached the top and ran down in waist deep Dr. Seuss grass: dodging llamas, alpaca, puppies, & donkeys; racing the setting sun.
