“This moment has a kind of after-hours-at-the-Cotton-Club vibe,” said Zack Winokur, the director of “The Black Clown,” a musical-theater adaptation of the 1931 Langston Hughes poem at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival. In it, Zack and Chanel DaSilva, the show’s choreographer, evoke the spirits of Josephine Baker, the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway. “It’s the eternal joy and glee of African-Americans in society behind the mask,” Chanel said. “We have our guard down.” In this section of “The Black Clown,” which opens Wednesday at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, Darius Barnes (in the white tank) and Evan Tyrone Martin play the Nicholas Brothers, the electrifying, acrobatic tap duo. While they don’t quote from the brothers directly, Darius and Evan have been studying their overall approach to movement: “Mostly, we watch their port de bras,” Darius told the #nytimes writer @giadk, referring to the carriage of the arms. “How loose they are. It’s a lot of work in the legs, but their upper bodies are so easy. That is where I am calm.” @xdonavon made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
