Regardless of your personal views on TMT, this image reminds us that Aloha, Mahalo and Makawalu should always prevail.
As staff and kumu we all have personal views - many haumāna, kumu and allies are on the Mauna or supporting in some way. As an educational nonprofit, we try not to impose anyoneʻs personal views, but rather encourage Mahalo (Respect & Appreciation), Makawalu (ʻEight Eyesʻ - being open to many perspectives) and respectful conversation and action toward positive change and pono.
We send our pule and aloha to ALL on the mauna, including the police officers and those who see things differently.
In fear of sending the wrong message, some of us had reservations about showing too many shots in our video of ʻHawaiian against Hawaiianʻ - those in uniform and those in ʻprotestʻ at Mauna Kea and the Waimanalo Evictions. As 1 of many ways we can practice Makawalu, check out this #Repost from @mahinadahui808:
As someone who comes from a law enforcement Ohana, this photo hits home. We know some of those kānaka officers who are up at Pu’u Huluhulu and for the ones we know & spoke to, they don’t really want to be there. It’s hard when you take an oath to serve & protect and then comes duties like this. I saw the tears and uncomfortable demeanor as they stood in formation facing their own people. But, they have families to feed. Mortgages/Rent, etc. Also have relatives in the Lāhui. Even Ohana to some of the kūpuna that were arrested. Such a hard position to be in. And they’re only under orders from the top. So that’s where we need to put our focus on. Governor Ige, you can stop this madness. Obviously you haven’t noticed, kānaka maoli are beautiful people full of Kapu Aloha. We are not the enemy. Stop the Madness Now.

While I think a little differently, I respect that this is not my culture so I may not fully understand this and I also have my own biases getting in the way of understanding. The police are definitely thought of in a different light in North America, especially in the U.S., so I can see partly why I have these biases. In the U.S. law enforcement may be considered a form of institutional racism and a way to uphold white supremacy. But this is not so for every country in the world and I appreciate you and your friends, family, and allies giving them the same empathy as we all wish they/people would give us. This is important.

This photo reminds me so much of that forced kid/cop photo of Devonte Hart. He was coerced by his (white) abusive adopted mother to hug a cop and the photo went viral. The mothers later killed the whole family (they adopted 6 Black and Brown kids...) by driving them off a cliff. I don’t think moments like this should be exploited by turning them into photo opps. You never know the real background. The kid did what they did here, nobody needs to post a photo of it; it ultimately just serves as pro-cop PR once it makes it through media filters.

@prideofgypsies thank you for posting this. It comes to often that police get looked at as bad guys alot and in my times they do what they dint want to do because like you said it's their job and they took the oath. This meant alot to me. Being a mother and a wife of a man that was not a police officer but military and I look at all men in uniform to be the best they can and many times what they go through never gets recognized. The pain they have be forced to do and see.

I think this is the thing that makes me so sad - when Hawaiian police are being used to remove their own people from protecting their own heritage and that of their kids and in their own language - we have the same issue in NZ where Maori police are used to confront Maori protestors - it is a very sad situation created by those that try to divide us. Sending aloha/aroha and Kia kaha to all Hawaiians.

Maybe if all law enforcement would stand down and band togeather and help there people stop this from happening ITS AND IDEA what are they going to do fire the whole police department but again that's just wishful thinking but it would be cool if it happened and everyone came togeather to to support there way of life there land and just went with there hearts

From our sister Island Puerto Rico, I feel you as we protest against corruption on our government, we must not forget that police men abd women are not our enemies. They have been abuses too by our corrupt leaders. We must concentrate our energy towards our true enemies: corruption, lies, intolerance, lack of respect for our people and our dead.
