This month ,UNESCO announced 29 new World Heritage Sites and one is the Hyrcanian Forests, which stretch 850 km along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. In that area, the humidity is blocked by the massive Alborz mountain range. The unique forests are 25 to 50 million years old, but are shrinking fast due to human impact and poor management. Now, hope accompanies the UNESCO designation. The Caspian Tiger, now extinct, once roamed the area. But the forests are still home to other large mammals, including Persian leopards, lynx, brown bears, wild boars, wolves, golden jackals, jungle cats, badgers, and otters.
