Photo by Brian Skerry @brianskerry | A great white shark attacks a seal decoy off Monomoy Island, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Since about 2009, this region has become a newly forming hub of white shark activity. The sharks arrive in summer to feed on gray seals. According to historical records, the seals here were wiped out in the late 1600s and have rebounded only in recent years, due to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Unlike great whites in other regions of the world, the sharks here seem to be using different feeding strategies to hunt the seals, often feeding in shallow water.
