San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California is one of the few places in the world where whales seek out physical contact with people. It appears that these gray whales like to have their heads scratched as much as humans do. This unique whale culture has been passed down from mother to calf for over 40 years and it is the whales who initiate and are in charge of such encounters. Interestingly this behavior ceases the moment they leave the lagoon and begin their migration north to their feeding grounds. Local fishing families operate seasonal whale watching in the lagoon and have become the whale’s fiercest guardians. In the late 1990s they partnered with conservation organizations to defeat a salt mining proposal that would have dramatically degraded this critical gray whale nursery.
