Bright, colorful pockets of star formation are blooming in this spiral galaxy just under 70 million light-years away, seen by the @NASAHubble Space Telescope. The orange-pink glow is created as hydrogen gas reacts to the intense light streaming outwards from nearby newborn stars. These bright patches can be seen here amid dark, tangled streams of cosmic dust.
Astronomers look for these telltale signs of star formation when they study galaxies throughout the cosmos, as star formation rates, locations, and histories offer critical clues about how these colossal collections of gas and dust have evolved over time. New generations of stars contribute to — and are also, in turn, influenced by — the broader forces and factors that mold galaxies throughout the universe, such as gravity, radiation, matter, and dark matter.

@teddy_och if you get the Discovery Channel, set the program titled How the Universe Works to record. It's narrated by the amazing Mike Rowe who, along with leaders in the fields of astronomy, theoretical and experimental physics, astrophysics, exobiology, and many more, break down and explain the universe in very understandable ways. Ways that even I can understand.! There is a current 7th season but you may want to record the earlier episodes too as they are all very interesting and informational. PBS' show, titled NOVA, is another great one for these subjects. If you have DirecTV, all episodes of How the Universe Works are available On Demand. The Science Channel also has some excellent ones that make it all easy to understand. I'm totally addicted to How the Universe Works. There may be another, older show titled Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman available On Demand, or in syndication reruns you may or may not like - some people think they're a little too elementary but I still loved them. If you decide to look them up, good luck, and enjoy!

@thedoctor333 awesome! There's obviously a lot going on in astronomy and it's amazing. Just that the language is so sophisticated it throws many off balance. But good for guys who do that stuff!????
