Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto | Like a watery mirror in the desert, this tenaja holds a reflection of morning clouds in the Basin and Range National Monument, Nevada. Tenajas are small rainwater pools that have been enlarged by Native Americans to increase their capacity. Water can be a scarce commodity in the Nevada desert. I am on a journey through the Western U.S. on an @insidenatgeo / @ancientartarchve project looking at some of the national monuments recently studied for reduction. The Basin and Range was not reduced and remains an expanse of wild land the size of Rhode Island.
