Photo by Robin Hammond @hammond_robin | “When I was younger, there were only two ways of life, gay or straight, that’s it,” says Malaysia, a transgender woman living in New Orleans. “I knew that I wasn’t straight, but I attempted to be, because that’s how everyone else was and I thought that it would keep me from being harassed and beat. It didn’t work.” It’s been 50 years since the Stonewall riots in New York City—an uprising by the LGBTQI+ community against the discrimination they regularly faced. It is widely considered the most important event leading to the LGBTQI+ liberation movement. But liberation didn’t come immediately, nor did it come for all. It has been reported that trans people of color have a life expectancy in the US of 35 years! Malaysia is very aware of the dangers trans people face, but she’s fought all her life to be her true self and she’s not changing for anyone. @mariahmaymay this happens every day in America and is supported by our health care system ever heard of circumcision? Our youth is suffering because people like you cannot except that other people feel like theyre bodies don't match their gender and living in a world where no matter what they aren't accept. Being transgender has nothing to do with you or anyone else and everything to do with individual people. No body cares that you aren't okay with this. Move on and keep living in your bigoted denial. What your asking is for everyone to live the life you have envisioned for them so you can be comfortable, selfish and self absorbed.

You know what needs to stay in the “closet” ? Hate!! I don’t understand why all the hate. What is it that everyone is afraid of? Everyone is different and should be celebrated as such! Who gives a crap if someone is gay or trans or bi. We should give people the space and accept each other and stop judging. People don’t just become trans or gay or bi because the media pushes them to. That’s such an ignorant comment you hear all the time. We need to spread love and acceptance and stop with all the hating just because people are different and let everyone be who they want to be as long as they’re not hurting anyone.

She is so incredibly beautiful and it’s wonderful that she is being exactly who she feels she is and wants to be. I’m glad that in this day and age we can step up and have the guts to change who we are so that we are happy, no matter what others say! Can we please stop bad mouthing Natgeo for this? This is as much an issue for us as chained tigers and the other issues highlighted in the nature photographs we see posted here every day.

@sustainable.journey Uh, I don’t think we’re in any danger of running out of men anytime soon so that’s a moot point lol. More and more transgender men are also starting to arise and come out. But you probably meant “real,” biological men, right? Well we’re probably not going to run out of those either so you don’t need to worry your pretty TERF head about that

Can anyone explain to me what they mean by saying, "born in the wrong body"? Is the brain part of that body? And is it scientific provable? Because no offense to anybody, sounds like a mental illness. Just like saying a person with multiple personalities disorder is a group of people just in one body.

@emeraldstar_14 nobody knows how any of it works, that’s why there are movements like this. I personally don’t understand why anorexia is treated as an illness yet the urge to have gender changing surgery isn’t. I don’t condemn it. People can do what they want, it doesn’t affect me.
