By 1987, over 49,000 cases of AIDS had been reported in the United States, resulting in over 28,000 deaths.
That was the year ACT UP, a political action group working to end the AIDS crisis, formed. This is one of their posters.(Swipe ➡️ to read what’s written at the bottom of the poster). 1987 was also the year that President Reagan declared AIDS "public health enemy number one." However, prior to 1987, government officials including Reagan remained largely silent on the topic of AIDS.
Activists were not silent, though. They placed more and more pressure on leaders to act. Americans had already been fighting AIDS for more half a decade. For instance, the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), one of the earliest AIDS organizations, formed in January 1982.
The AIDS epidemic modernized the gay rights movement and propelled gay liberation by decimating and restructuring communities, creating solidarity, and necessitating out-of-the-box confrontations.

paintedintocorner 1987 was the last year my dad was “himself”, but by then he already knew. He was able to keep it silent until 1988. He died from AIDS 9th of April 1989. My mom died from it 5 years later. My brother found out in 1986, but luckily he got on meds, and good drug trials. He’s fit and well — no trace of it for over 8? years now.
