We grew up on a tiny little farm on a tiny little country in the middle of a great Pacific Ocean. Each afternoon, the local kids and I would meet together and play touch rugby or a local form of baseball called lani-ta. We used branches that we carved out with a machete as a bat. There was one small black and white tv in the village; we would stand outside the house for hours looking through the window to watch the rugby games that were being shown.
I remember us finishing our afternoon sports and disappearing into the brush to look for fruit. My father had just returned from overseas and had brought back a little wind film camera. I ‘borrowed’ it from him when he wasn’t looking so I could show the kids at the farm that we had a camera. One of those kids snapped this picture of me climbing. Being the smallest at the time, I was the ‘pui’ boy meaning I or whoever was youngest had to do the tasks no one else wanted to do. Sometimes this involved ‘taking’ watermelon or pineapple from the farmers plots when the coast was clear or running five miles to the store to buy the oldest kids cigarettes so their parents never found out.
In this case, the kids were thirsty from sports so I was sent up the tree to get everyone coconuts. I didn’t mind. I loved to climb. I remember those days vividly ...
