Migrant Kids in America: ***Please share this post***
***What can you do? Scroll to end of post for tips*** The US has been holding migrant children in conditions that can only be described as horrific and inhumane.

That’s according to attorneys who met with children at multiple detention facilities. See my interview with one of those attorneys, Prof Warren Binford @binfordwh, in “stories” above. (Tip: advance to 3 mins to hear her talk about the conditions, the law and why this is not a partisan issue.) Imagine hundreds of children sleeping on concrete, no soap, few showers, limited outdoors, flu outbreaks, lice outbreaks, open toilets with overcrowding, no parents, for weeks at a stretch. She says no wonder kids have died in CPB detention. She says this isn’t about politics, it's about being humane.
Context: There is a legal agreement from the 80s -- shorthanded “the Flores settlement” – which should make this treatment illegal. It requires that the government keep migrant kids in safe and sanitary conditions and that they’re moved out of Customs and Border Patrol detention rapidly. The government’s lawyer argued to a panel of judges that these conditions meet the requirements of the Flores settlement.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Prof Binford advises that you call your members of Congress – that means both your Representative and your Senator. And ask them to:
1. Remove all children from Customs and Border Patrol detention, immediately
2. Pass legislation mandating national uniform standards for the care of detained children

The first step can happen fast – it doesn’t require legislation from Congress. It’s simply up to the decision makers in the administration to move the kids. In fact, there are reports that CPB removed kids from one of the facilities to a site they say is more suitable. That’s because this news spread and the resulting outcry made a difference. NOTE That does not mean the problem has been solved. There are kids in other facilities.
This is one of those times when raising your voice can make a big difference.
