This massive crater in a field near Ahlbach, Germany, was "almost certainly" caused by a World War II bomb, officials said. Residents were likely asleep when they were jolted by a sudden blast at 4 a.m. on Sunday, which left behind a hole that measured 33 feet wide and 13 feet deep, police say. After a day studying the crater, officials said it was likely a 550-pound dud. "We can be glad that the farmer was not in the field," a city spokesman said. Undiscovered bombs can often explode without outside forces acting on them, experts say, as their detonators decompose over time. Old bombs are not uncommon finds in Germany and elsewhere, with hundreds found each year. (📸: Boris Roessler/Getty Images)
