Sen. Kamala Harris, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, introduced a bill Thursday to reduce the transmission of HIV by encouraging the use of PrEP, a drug that is more than 92% effective in preventing new infections. If it becomes law, PrEP would be free to most patients. Currently, a generic form of the drug, known as Truvada, costs more than $21,000 a year, or about $60 per daily pill, according to GoodRx.
