Andy Warhol’s lifelong preoccupation with public image and beauty was linked to the inadequacies he saw within his own physical appearance, which led him to confront and question the grand tradition of self-portraiture. A genre which has historically granted the viewer a highly personal insight into the workings of an artist’s psyche, Warhol instead chose to put forth a highly curated and constructed vision of himself as an icon of popular culture, thus refusing to allow any deeper insight into his true identity. By the late 1980s Warhol’s self-image was virtually a complete fabrication, and yet no other artist’s image has become so completely synonymous with their creative output.
