Lost for almost three centuries, this newly-discovered painting by Spanish master, Diego Velázquez shows Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilj – the most powerful woman in 17th-century Rome. Ambitious, domineering and deeply corrupt, Olimpia was the power behind Pope Innocent X’s throne. An early feminist she was admired by women from across the Catholic world but despised by the cardinals of the Papal court.

joe_arev Its funny how such an incredbly important painting just appears on the market. No word of it being found untill it suddenly appears for sale. A newly found Velazquez is a big deal. The Art world is filled with gate keepers and the super rich that only allow there friends and there works of art to get the golden stamp of approval to come to market.

dominiquemillar_art No Velazquez expert but stylistically it doesn’t “look” like any Velazquez I can think of at close range. Comparatively so much tighter handling of paint than the Innocent X or Cardinal Massimo for example. The strong green to pink in the flesh?

joe_arev To be clear, I am not suggesting that this is not a real Velazquez. I know it is. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of the elitist art world
