It sounds like something out of a science fiction plot — are people really growing horn-like structures on their skulls due to smartphone use?

A study published last year in the journal Scientific Reports found bony growths called bone spurs on the bases of people's skulls that could be linked to looking down at a cell phone. Younger people were found to have larger growths.

Bone spurs — small bony growths that can form on the edges of bones — often form from repetitive motions. One type of repetitive motion is tilting the head forward, perhaps to look at a smartphone.
