It was a giant leap for womankind. On June 18, 1983, at age 32, Sally Ride launched into the atmosphere aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, becoming the first American woman, and the youngest American, to go into space. When she joined the space program in the 1970s, NASA was still overwhelmingly male, so adjustments had to be made before her first flight. In one often reported anecdote, the male engineers tasked with planning a "makeup kit" asked Ride how many tampons she might need for a weeklong journey. “Is 100 the right number?” Ride replied: “No. That would not be the right number.” Ride, who died in 2012, was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013.
