Last night I had the absolute pleasure of co-hosting an event supporting Shannon Watts and her new book Fight Like a Mother. First of all, thank you to @mandanadayani for asking me to be a part of this. Mandana gave up a hugely successful job to create @iamavoter bc she felt it was her civic duty. Thank you to my date, @ジューン・ダイアン・ラファエル and my wonderful friends who came to listen, learn and support. June and I talk often about what more we can be doing to help, to fix, and at times it can feel like we’re banging our heads against a wall. But then you hear about Shannon. Shannon Watts was a stay-at-home mom of 5 who watched on the news, as we all did, the shooting of Sandy Hook unfold. She got fed up. Started a Facebook group and is now leading the largest grassroots organization ( @momsdemand ) in the country for sensible gun laws (something that 91% of Americans believe in, yet have become one of the more challenging things to pass.) Thank you, Shannon, for leading the way. To Mandana and June for walking the walk. I feel lucky to have the privilege of being your friend. Check out @momsdemand @everytown

Thank you for using your voice. We must have common sense gun laws NOW. The only way to achieve this goal is to vote out anyone who takes money from the NRA and vote in people who put our lives before money from gun lobbyists. If it wasn’t such a serious matter I would laugh when people say “ Arm the teachers”. Maybe we could start arming them with the supplies that their students need so they don’t have to pay for them out of their own pockets. Show me a person who uses that argument and I’ll show you a loyal Fox viewer. Every. Damn. Time. Keep it up Brooke! People with a voice need to use it.

Here’s the thing. I don’t hate you. You will be a good mom and you probably live a good life. But I disagree with you. That doesn’t mean I want children to die in school. Why can’t you hear a disagreement, take it in and move on. Just because someone has a different solution to something 1) doesn’t make them right and 2) doesn’t make them ok with murder. We need to do a better job of teaching our kids tolerance for people’s differences in opinions. It’s ok. I need to work on it as well. Fair enough?

We need to stop wasting time on things that will never happen like trying to get rid of guns, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. So concentrate on reforming laws in place not taking away constitutional rights.
