🍠 Smokey made a reservation at Tenryu-ji Temple. The all vegetarian meal served at this Zen monastery is designed to feed the mind and body just enough so that one is free to practice the art of zen with ease. Prepared by the “tenzo”, they carefully plan each meal so there is a harmony of the basic flavors- bitter, sour, sweet, salty, light and hot (also an RHCP album title) All the flavors are subtle. Things like garlic are FORBIDDEN.
It was nice to sit quietly and appreciate the intricacy and effort in each dish. American cultural is all about “flavor town” and traditional Japanese cuisine, while of course it can be deep fried, Kewpie covered and soy drenched, excels at the art of simplicity. I didn’t know tofu could be served so many ways or that picked radishes could be so delightful. It was just so nice to appreciate this delicate vegetarian meal and not be reaching for Cool ranch flavored butter corn dip... But that does sound amazing.
