with @cnbcmakeit: Would 90k attract you to the job? Walmart hopes it will. In the face of a nationwide truck driver shortage, the retail giant upped the ante back in February by raising driver salaries to $87,500 a year, on average.
Walmart hired more than 1,400 new drivers last year. But roughly two-thirds of the nation’s freight is transported by truck, so the company needs another large batch of fresh drivers to keep it running.
Although the salary is tantalizing -- the ultra-low unemployment rate and the job’s challenging on-the-road lifestyle still makes it difficult to attract workers. The American Trucking Association estimates there are about 48,000 vacant trucking jobs.
