Meet Mr. Juan Carlos Luna Vargas! He’s a 5th grade teacher at Hughbanks Elementary School in Rialto, CA and he and I share a passion for making sure all kiddos have full tummies so they can reach their full potential. Here’s his story: “I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was a child, and now have more than 15 years of classroom experience. One thing I love about my job is the opportunity to shape individuals and give my students skills they can take beyond the classroom for a lifetime of success. Food is a big piece of this – kids can’t learn if they’re hungry. I know food is just as important to my students’ ability to learn as pencils and notebooks. Hunger makes it harder to focus and perform academically, and can impact students overall health and well-being. 84% of students at Hughbanks Elementary qualify for free or reduced priced meals, and I know there are kids in my classroom each year that don’t get a meal at home in the morning. We offer Breakfast in the Classroom, which guarantees all of my students can start each day with a healthy meal. I was skeptical at first, but quickly saw that it takes minimal instruction time and the clean-up process is smooth – plus it gives my students quality time to eat together each morning. Now I encourage every elementary school in America to give Breakfast in the Classroom a try! I’m constantly striving to make my classroom comfortable and inviting so we can make the most of that special time we have to eat breakfast together each morning. I have witnessed first-hand the challenges my students have to face in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are one paycheck away from being homeless.
