He believes the gift will affect 3 generations. “Not only does it affect me or affect my parents, it also affects my kids,” he said. Smith, the richest black man in the U.S., said that his family would pay off the loans of the 2019 Morehouse College graduating class as he delivered the school’s commencement speech on Sunday. But amid the euphoria are feelings of envy and remorse. Some students never made it to graduation because their crushing debts forced them to withdraw before they earned a degree. “I felt a level of survivor’s guilt,” Myles said.
