“You only get to fall once.” For decades, window washers have been risking their lives just so we can look out a clean window while we’re daydreaming — and they love the rush. Entrepreneurs have been trying to train robots to clean skyscrapers for years and, if the technology ever gets good enough, it will be a hard day for the men and women who wield the squeegees. The truth is that nationwide there are only a handful of window-washing deaths each year. But are robots an inevitability even if regulations have made window washing safer over the years? Ernie Sisto shot this photo in 1953. Visit the link in our profile to see more #windowcleaning, and follow @nytarchives for more #throwback photos.
