It effectively bans all abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. GOP Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to sign it into law. Details: The bill permits abortion only when the mother’s life is in danger. In all other cases an abortion would be a felony. Under the new law, women who seek illegal abortions wouldn’t be jailed but doctors who perform them face up to 99 years in prison. That’s a longer sentence than for rape or manslaughter. Opponents say: Women will always seek abortions; restricting access only drives despreate pregnant women to unsafe, underground options. The bill strips women of the right to control their bodies and disproportionately affects poor women and women of color who are less likely to afford out of state abortions. The bill was passed by 25 white men in the Alabama Senate, where only 4 women hold seats. (Note the bill was introduced by a woman in the Al House.) • Supporters Say: Rep Terri Collins who sponsored the Al bill: “An unborn baby is a person who deserves love and protection.” With Justice Kavanaugh replacing moderate Justice Anthony Kennedy this is the most anti-abortion Supreme Court in the modern era and the right time to challenge Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion in America. By almost entirely banning abortion, the Al bill presents the best opportunity to overturn or chip away at the protections established by Roe. • National Trend: Six states passed laws that ban abortion at 6 weeks, once a fetal heartbeat is detected -- so early, in some cases, women don’t yet know they’re pregnant then. (The laws haven’t taken effect or are blocked by courts.) There’s a trend in the other direction as well: the Kansas Supreme Court recently ruled that the state’s consitution protects a woman’s right to choose abortion. Abortion rights supporters see this as a path for similiar court rulings in other states. • Note: The Alabama law has NOT gone into effect.
