Photo by @Gerd Ludwig | On March 20, the capital of Kazakhstan was renamed from Astana to Nursultan. “Nursultan” was chosen to honor outgoing president Nursultan Nazarbayev, who unexpectedly resigned March 19 after serving as the first and only president of modern Kazakhstan for almost 30 years. It is the fourth time in less than 60 years that the city has been renamed, from the original Akmolinsk to Tselinograd to Akmola to Astana, and now Nursultan. The once-small town rose from a forsaken landscape of post-Soviet Russia, replacing Almaty as Kazakhstan’s capital in 1997 and growing since into a futuristic city.
