It's also home to the International Renewable Energy Agency. The city draws on elements of traditional Arab architecture—such as a 148-foot wind tower that pushes a cooling breeze through narrow, shaded streets—but its goal is to create a more sustainable model of urban life in the region. A decade ago Dubai had one of the largest ecological footprints of any city in the world. By 2050 it wants to have the smallest. Can it get there? My work revolves around the making of the future, how our society transitions through new ways of living, and how technology is changing our approach to the environment and to our cities.
