In some ways, there’s a template for being a teenage girl in America: going to school, hanging at the mall, staying up late texting friends and studying for tomorrow’s test. But for the “valley girls” of #RioGrande, the borderland where Mexico and the U.S. meet, life is bilingual, binational and often riddled with the daily drama of poverty and deportation. We spoke to young women like Gaby Brown, 15, who recently celebrated her quinceañera and wants to join the military like her mom, and Jocelyn Guzman, 18, a U.S. citizen who lives in Matamoros, Mexico, and crosses the border to attend high school in Brownsville, Texas. @ilanapl shot this photo of Gaby getting ready for her #quinceaera.
