🐣 We have 2️⃣ endangered #redsiskin chicks in nests at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, #Virginia. The adult siskins built soft cup-shaped nests out of hair donated from several other species living at SCBI, including our cheetahs, dama gazelles, scimitar-horned oryx and American bison. There are very few red siskin in the wild and in human care. Keepers at SCBI are studying and developing the best ways to care for the birds with the hope of building a self-sustaining population in human care that could eventually be reintroduced to the wild. #Ornithology #WeSaveSpecies
