The visualization of black American culture has had many phases in which excellence has been achieved. Animating and thus unlocking the splendid subtlety of blackness takes not only skill in craft and vision in the arts but also heart and soul and intimacy with the experience of American blackness. The layers one must navigate to achieve this excellence are not easily consolidated but when they are magic occurs, spells are cast and longevity begins. Films like Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice and Baby Boy surpassed the label of “classic” and achieved something that only a few pieces of art & craft ever dream of achieving, that of Parent. These films act as griots and guides. Teachers and warners. Comforters and realists. They activated the dynamic black soul and infiltrated even the hardest mind and coaxed it into observing potential and consequence. They broke the heart and rebuilt it. They amused and connected us to struggle. They somehow stand watch as protectors. Monuments of black achievement and in that did the work of constructing a meaningful past for a generation. They also brought out the best performances from some of our best performers. Boyz In The Hood is our Illiad, Odyssey, Inferno, New Testament, Macbeth, Othello and Interpretation Of Dreams all compressed into one grand work of black excellence. John Singleton I salute you.
