Nari Ward's 1993 work "Amazing Grace" captures both the tragedy and the hopeful inventiveness that characterized New York City in the early 1990s, a place and time marked by profound change. The work comprises approximately 280 abandoned strollers collected from the surrounding neighborhood, encompassed by a field of flattened fire hoses.
.
As with other early works, Ward created Amazing Grace by accumulating and transforming materials that would otherwise be considered trash. See the work, and more from Ward's 25-year career as part of "We the People," on view through May 26. #NariWard @nariward
