Chicks begin to swim on their own at about nine weeks of age, and adults can dive to depths of 575 feet. While searching for food, they might swim as much as 185 miles before returning to shore. In the decades I have spent documenting marine wildlife, the majority of my encounters are brief; I often wait weeks and even months for an opportunity to get close to a specific species to photograph behavior. My time with Adélie penguins, however, was a special joy, as I would sit near their colonies and watch them for hours at a time. I found myself laughing at their routines and personalities, from stealing rocks from neighbors’ nests to squabbles between individuals as they went about their daily business. They were clearly aware of my presence, but they usually paid me little attention and simply stuck to their own agenda.
