The whole population of these animals is limited to seven mountain ranges in north east Africa. Unfortunately due to destruction of its traditional range and disease transference from domestic dogs, there are only a few hundred of these exquisite Canids left. There is controversy over exactly where in the Canid family this animal fits. Some of the first people to try to classify it thought of it as “only an exaggerated fox". Genetic testing has revealed that it predates modern wolves by more than a million years. The Ethiopian wolves lives on a diet of small mammals. It’s primary prey being the big headed African mole rat. Conservation efforts are ongoing to try to prevent this animal from going extinct. These efforts include vaccination programs for diseases such as rabies and distemper. Past rabies outbreaks have killed of as much as 75% of the population.
