We decided to send Mazzy to a sleep away camp for a few weeks this summer. She asked to go, most of her friends are going to sleep away camps too, and it seemed like the right thing to do. However. I AM WORRIED ABOUT HER HAIR. She has so much of it, and I help her brush and style it every day. God knows what will happen to her hair if only she is in charge of it for a few weeks 😣 It was only very recently that I stopped checking her in the shower to make sure she got all the shampoo out! Also, I’m going to miss her 😭😭😭 Oh and btw, for those of you who suggested a silk pillow, thank you! We bought one and it works great! Not great enough to totally alleviate my concerns about camp, but much improved!

As a camp counselor for many years - I’ve always said that sleep away camp for young girls is life changing! I would watch them come into my cabin on the lower hill (ending third or fourth grade) super scared/worried/hesitate/nervous and by the end of the session they were empowered/braver/stronger/proud of what they accomplished! And the older girls are awesome role models - they show off what disconnecting from technology looks like- what not worrying about make-up/social drama looks like- they show off what getting their roll in their kayak feels like, climbing their first route (or leading it)... again- life changing!! You will be amazed at the girl you pick up!! @campillahee taught me all these things ❤️❤️🗻🏕

I started going to camp when I was eight (LOVED IT), and I had long think hair like Mazzy's. My mother would send me with a super tight french braid that could withstand a day or two and by then there was always an offer from someone to braid it again. The only time my mother might have been freaked out when she picked me up was the year we all used sharpies to color the ends of our hair.

I had LONG hair when I was her age, and my mom would brush and braid my hair every day. Before I went to sleep away camp for a week in fifth grade, my mom and I practiced me doing braided pigtails every day so I wouldn't come home with a giant matted mess. I managed it pretty well, and I think that was the start of me learning to do all sorts of stuff for myself!

Ahhh, I was right where you are last year. Not going to lie - my daughter came home from 7 weeks of sleep away camp with a few near dreadlocks in her hair (she said they were braids she forgot about) but her experience at camp far outweighed the small inconvenience of detangling her when she got home! I hope your daughter has the best summer! Good luck, momma!

I always hated combing my hair when I was younger to the point that I simply didn’t do it very often. My suggestion is teach her to comb it with conditioner and while damp and find a comb she likes. My favorite comb aka one that my hair doesn’t seem to fight is a revlon comb I’ve only found in a 3 pack with other combs at ulta.

When I was a camp counselor for littler kids, we did swimsuit showers every day after swimming in the lake - assembly line style, one stall was shampoo, the next conditioner, and the next they took off suits and cleaned off, another counselor helped them dry off and get suits all hung up ☺️
