"Canned Smiles" (2013) was inspired by an exchange with a European collector who expressed surprise that #NariWard’s work did not seem particularly happy, though Ward had been introduced as a “Jamaican artist.” For Ward, the cliché of the happy Jamaican artist echoed racist stereotypes from the history of American minstrelsy. The editioned work consists of two cans, titled “Jamaican Smiles” and “Black Smiles,” each with a mirror placed inside it. Ward smiled into the former, while his daughter and son—who, unlike the artist, were both born in the United States—smiled into the latter.

Why did you feel the need to comment on that collectors Ethnicity? Why did this person copy Manzoni? Why are these water down politically charged posts and artists so depressing and make me want to throw my phone through your window.?

it reminds to "Merda d'artista" (artist's shit) by Piero Manzoni
