‘Untitled (Yellow White Butterfly)’ is an exquisite specimen from Mark Grotjahn’s celebrated series of Butterfly paintings. Harnessing natural world phenomena while investigating the fundamental tenets of abstraction, the artist achieves a result that is as aesthetically seductive as it is rigorously analytical.

The central vertical strip delineates the butterfly’s ‘spine’, from which two spectrums of radial vectors cascade outwards to establish the dynamic trajectories of its ‘wings’, their delicate tremors conjuring the sensation of being weightless and mid-flight.

Marking Grotjahn’s auction debut in Asia, the painting comes to sale from the collection of the late David Teiger, the visionary collector, patron and museum trustee. It will be offered in our Contemporary Art Evening Sale in #HongKong on 1 April. #SothebysHongKong #SothebysContemporary
